Are Casement Windows Easier To Use?

This article is designed to give you information about casement windows, more specifically what sort of pros and cons are linked with them, what to expect and maintenance issues.

Casement windows consist of a pane of glass attached to its frame by one more hinges. Households predominantly used this type before the more modern sash windows were introduced. Casement windows open outward and usually contained glass panes which were fixed in place by lead strips.

Benefits

Large Opening

With a casement window the entire frame can be swung open to a greater degree than any other type. The following types of windows have a more limited opening:

Double-hung: only the lower portion or the upper portion can be opened but never both.
Sliding: only one side of the window can be opened with this type.
Fixed: these cannot be opened at all.
Casement windows are a popular choice in properties where a large window opening is a desirable feature.

Safety

They feature a hook shaped, embedded casement lock which is very inaccessible to someone outside and thus makes it very difficult to break into. On the other hand other types of windows such as the double-hung window can be broken into relatively easily by inserting a pry-bar under the sash and lifting.

Maximum Ventilation

A large window opening is ideal for allowing large amounts of air flow - into and out of the property. Furthermore, wind which blows along your house a steep angle will find it hard to penetrate through the windows, resulting in poor ventilation. Since casement windows can be opened outwards, air traversing along the walls can be directed into the property via the open sash, and is particularly useful for windows with only a small amount of external space.

Opening & Closing

They are very easy to open and close due to their single leaver or tandem latches, and they can even be enhanced by fitting automatic openers.

Drawbacks

Unsafe

Although casement windows are good for ventilation, they can pose a safety risk, particularly for families with young children, since the opening is large, a small person or child to accidentally fallout.

Air Conditioning

Unlike other types of windows which slide up and down, casement are not particular compatible with air conditioning units since they open outwards.

Size Variety

The opening must be strong enough to support the weight of the entire window when it is opened. This places limits on how large a casement window can be without placing unnecessary strain on the opening.
