With a history dating back to the 16th century, Venetian blinds consist of horizontal slats held together by vertical strips of cloth. Traditionally, they were made from wood but are now available in a wide range of styles and materials. The horizontal slats can be turned almost 180°, allowing the user to adjust the amount of sunlight let in by the blinds.
Venetian blinds offer a classic look to any home; indeed, they were the preferred style choice for many homes and offices in the early 20th century, with the Empire State Building representing one huge order for a lucky blind company!
Over the past few decades, Venetian blinds have gradually been overlooked in favour of roller blinds and vertical blinds. This is predominantly due to the fact these designs are easier to clean and maintain, whilst also being somewhat simpler to operate. Nevertheless, for the decorator looking to inject some classic style into their home, you can't go far wrong with Venetian blinds.
As previously alluded to, Venetian blinds come in a range of materials and styles, and the one you choose will predominantly come down to the room you are decorating and the style in which you want decorate your home.
If you want to go for a classic look, then wooden blinds are definitely for you. Perfect for anything from a rustic cottage setting to a bedroom, wooden Venetian blinds offer a timeless style that should provide a warming feel to any room!
Should you decide to go for wooden blinds, it's a good idea to consider if you want real wood or wood effect blinds. Real wood is a perfect choice if you won't be touching the blinds too often and are willing to put in the time and effort to properly maintain them.
However, if you're planning to put the blinds in a child's bedroom (for example), then it's probably best to go for faux-wood. This material offers all the benefits of aluminium blinds, such as easy cleaning, but with a classic wood finish. Perfect for keeping your blinds looking good regardless of who might be using them!
Of course, wooden blinds won't suit every room in the house, which is where aluminium comes in. Most non-wooden Venetian blinds are made of aluminium, which is easy to maintain and clean whilst providing all the benefits of traditional wooden blinds.
Another benefit to these blinds is that they can be decorated, printed and are adaptable to just about any colour you can imagine, making them ideal for any customisation you may want to undertake. A nice pink would suit a child's bedroom, whilst blue blinds complement any aqua-themed bathroom!
Aluminium blinds also offer a contemporary complement to modern design. Metallic finish blinds are perfect for any futuristic or minimalist designs, whilst white aluminium blinds can add an industrial edge to a room - great if you want to push some boundaries with your interior design!
Venetian blinds do require a bit of maintenance to keep them looking good, but for the most part this is as simple as running a cloth along the slats for dust and grime. Real wood blinds take a little bit more work, requiring proper wood cleaner, but are well worth the effort for the look they provide.
Also remember that Venetian blinds are delicate - don't pull down too heavily on a slat or it may break and, even worse, compromise the whole blind! However, with the correct care, Venetian blinds should provide an excellent complement to your room that lasts for years.
