BFSI Enterprise Mobility - Challenges and Key Solutions

Challenges:

1. Technological Challenges: These are the challenges in addressing and bringing together diverse mobile platforms, networks, devices, and operating systems. BFSI data is one of the most sensitive and vulnerable of most types of enterprise data. Encryption, scalability and security factors need to be addressed effectively.

2. Business Challenges: These are the political, regulatory and economic factors that can affect the BFSI enterprise operation across multiple levels. With these issues there is no one solution that fits all. Each of these factors need detailed analysis and redress. Included in this are business issues related to competitors, stakeholders and customer acceptance.

Key Solutions:

1. Inclusion of heterogeneous Infrastructure: Heterogeneity in mobile devices is here to stay. This needs to be accepted by BFSI organizations at the initial levels. Inclusion of diverse technologies and devices must be used as strength and this strength must be leveraged effectively. This has long term benefits in terms of cost saving, usability and accessibility as well as gives the freedom to the stake holders to choose their devices. BFSI mobility infrastructure should be designed to effectively include these diverse systems, technologies and mobile operating systems such as Symbian, Palm, BlackBerry, iOS, Android, Windows Mobile and other Linux variants.

2. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): The stakeholders especially the employees prefer to carry their choice of devices. By allowing the employees to choose their devices and facilitating the use of such devices for enterprise operations can be hugely beneficial to the BFSI organization in the long run. A single, unified and simplified gadget for BFSI enterprise work and communication (official and personal) makes better business sense. This solution is not only cost-effective but also reduces training needs for new devices and instantly improves productivity since the individual is familiar with the device.

3. Extensible Architecture: As a first step, BFSI enterprises should make sure of the existing infrastructure for incorporating mobility solutions and any extension to the existing infrastructure should be designed to be further extensible. Such architecture allows smooth scalability and flexibility for inclusion of more and improved functionalities in a phased manner.

4. Cloud Connection: BFSI enterprises must incorporate cloud computing in mobility solutions design and leverage this miracle system in improving responsiveness and productivity. Cloud computing solutions can be a gain to BFSI organizations which experience simultaneous access, control and updates to their records.

5. Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) and Mobile Device Management (MDM): These are the two key terms without which BFSI mobility is incomplete. While EMM is a unified management system that manages all the enterprise related devices and accessories according to set mobility protocols, MDM help enterprises to centralize operations of multiple smart devices effortlessly, transparently and seamlessly.

BFSI Enterprise mobility solutions are not devoid of challenges. The benefits far outweigh the challenges. These challenges can be addressed effectively with the adaption of easy, cost-effective, state of the art technological solutions.

Demystifying Enterprise Mobility Terminology

Enterprise mobility is now an integral part of any company strategy and it aims to enhance employee productivity, while simultaneously reducing operating costs to strengthen the bottom line of the company. However, most talk about such issues often ends up becoming an exchange of technical jargon, which is often difficult to understand for many decision makers. It is thus important to discuss some of the key terms currently associated with enterprise mobility solutions and this article attempts to develop an understanding of some of the key terms.

Mobility Policy

From an enterprise perspective, mobility policy covers the entire gamut of rules and policies, which are enforced by an organization to ensure proper usage of mobility devices in the enterprise. The mobility policy of an enterprise commonly includes guidelines for proper usage of mobility devices when connected to the company network or when connected to any other network. The mobility device usage policy of a company may specify or restrict the use of certain applications in order to facilitate the company's work. Additional aspects of the mobility policy may include either complete or partial reimbursements for mobility devices such as tablets, smart phones and net books bought by the employees themselves and/or restrictions on use of company-provided mobility devices for usage other than work-related usage.

MEAP (Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms)

Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms (MEAP) refers to the entire suite of products and services, which play a key role in the development of various mobile applications. The term was first used in a Gartner Magic Quadrant report published in the year 2008. MEAP was initially a replacement for the phrase "multi channel access gateway market". The MEAP approach is capable of supporting multiple mobility devices and platforms on an organization's network and helps in future-proofing a company's network to ensure long-term mobility support. MEAP solutions are ideal for companies seeking to implement the use of multiple mobility devices with a long-term future perspective. Key benefits of the approach include availability of high level programming languages and easy development templates which simplify as well as expedite the mobile application development process and ensure a shorter learning curve for the overall development process. Leading players in the MEAP market include Sybase Unwired Platform, IBM Worklight, Apple and Syclo.

MADP (Mobile Application Development Platforms)

MADP (Mobile Application Development Platform) refers to any of the OS, such as BlackBerry OS, Android OS, iPhone OS/iOS/Mac OS, Symbian OS, Windows Mobile OS etc., which are capable of supporting the development of apps designed for use in mobility devices with a small footprint such as tablets, smart phones etc. MADP is a more generic approach to the earlier discussed MEAP and also supports the development of apps, which are not designed for use on an enterprise network.

Container Techniques

Container techniques are a relatively new addition to the world of enterprise mobility and such techniques emerged mainly after the mass-scale introduction of BYOD policies on the enterprise scene. All container techniques attempt to separate the personal use apps on a mobility device from the apps for work-related use on the enterprise platform. Container techniques also ensure that business data is kept separate and protected from the user's personal data to ensure compliance with all data security guidelines currently enforced by the organization. Currently available container techniques also provide additional security to corporate data by supporting remote wipe, secure log on, encryption, identity management etc. Many offshore software development centers based in India are current engaged in developing software, which are targeted at implementing and maintaining a wide variety of container techniques.

Virtualization

Enterprise virtualization developed from the aim of enterprise IT departments to improve scalability of the enterprise network by improving overall utilization of available hardware resources. Virtualization enables multiple OS to operate in parallel on a single CPU and helps decrease the overhead costs of using such as system. Virtualization is however different from multitasking, as multitasking involves the operating of multiple programs on the same OS. From an enterprise mobility point of view, virtualization allows organizations to support multiple mobility devices as well as multiple mobility platforms by leveraging the company's current mobility infrastructure. Virtualization thus helps companies decrease the overall costs of implementing an enterprise-wise mobility strategy.

Wrappers

From a programming point of view, a wrapper is a script or program, which facilitates the operation of another program usually of greater importance. From the point of view of enterprise mobility, an apps wrapper commonly refers to the data put in front of or around a data transmission, which provides information about the data being transmitted. The wrapper can also perform additional functions such as encryption of the data being transmitted to provide superior data transmission and ensure that only the intended recipient is able to access the data. The use of wrappers is designed to provide superior security to data being transmitted over networks. Wrappers are especially important for enterprises due to the various data security compliance issues governing the management of sensitive corporate data. The implementation of wrappers is thus capable of ensuring integrity of corporate data and ensuring that the organization's mobility procedures conform to various local and international rules related to transmission and storage of sensitive corporate data.

Need for Enterprise Mobility in BFSI Organizations

Remote accessibility can be a game changer
Mobile-enabling BFSI workforce enables them to make best use of their time, with easy to operate hand held resources such as smartphones, tablets and other accessories. This allows for efficient remote processing, updating, documentation and reporting. The focus here shifts from headquarter-centered operations to smoothened remote operations by empowering the mobile workforce. Activities such as account management, transfers, balance enquiry, new applications entry and bill or premium payments can be done from anywhere saving time and resources.

Quick and efficient service can give an edge over the competitors
Enterprise mobility helps provide on-demand services and solutions with the use of a wide variety of applications on different types of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. This not only saves time and cost, but also boosts overall productivity of the enterprise. Leveraging the capabilities of smart devices and communication technology infrastructure to enhance service levels can give that edge to the enterprises taking them to an all-new level.

Global offices are becoming a reality
Enterprise mobility has the power to transcend the borders and make global office a reality. Multinational BFSI organizations can leverage this opportunity to gain the first mover advantage. Working with employees belonging to different nationalities seamlessly is possible with mobile-enabling solutions. Ability to authorize and approve applications, time and expenses, monitor and responding to various alerts, oversee daily operations, conduct verification and checking and sales force automation and CRM functions can all be carried out from anywhere, anytime.

Minimal investment can drastically improve the bottom line
There are challenges in strategizing, planning, technology and solutions deployment, however it is important to note that enterprise mobility is the future of customer service, more so for the BFSI enterprises which experience a high level customer facing functions. Mobility can be adapted in a phased manner and can be efficiently integrated with the existing systems, thereby making it cost effective. The advantages however are exponential when compared with the investment. Improved productivity and performance, faster response, reduced cost of service, reduced resource requirements are all factors that directly affect the bottom line.

A recent IDC survey suggests that 70% of organizations are currently deploying at least one other mobile application, with more than 30% of these companies deploying multiple mobile applications. In the next two years, organizations are expected to extend their mobile applications to areas such as CRM, ERP, SCM and a host of other functions.
